Starting a blog can feel overwhelming and even scary. When I started blogging in 2010 I felt intimidated and lurked on other blogs trying to build up the courage to actually publish a post on my own.
Because of that, I created a free guide is for anyone who wants to know how to start a blog and follow step by step instructions. I made so many mistakes and I hope following this guide helps you avoid doing the same. S0, by following these steps on how to start a WordPress blog on Bluehost you will have your own blog created.
Should you start a blog?
Starting a blog is a great way to help others and make money online. There are some blogging myths that I want to bust upfront. You do not have to be a great writer to be successful blogging. You also aren’t going to be successful and make money overnight.
Most successful bloggers write in a very conversational style. They write with their personal voice behind their message.
What do you need to start a blog?
To start a blog you simply need to have a passion for your topic. I don’t know many readers who want to read a blog in the form of a textbook. Boring! Because of that, it’s a good idea to write about your experiences with your topic. Keep it real!
As long as you write about a topic or topics that you are genuinely interested in your passion and your personality will shine. Being yourself will attract readers who connect with and relate to you. Don’t dim your shine!
So, how do you start a WordPress blog on Bluehost? Follow these 10 steps and you’ll be up and running in less than 25 minutes.
Step 1: Select A Blog Name
First things first when it’s time to start a WordPress blog on Bluehost. You need to decide what your domain name will be. Because this is not something that should not be taken lightly, give it some serious thought.
Think about what you plan to blog about. Knowing your topic or topics will help you come up with a name. Because you’ll be sharing your blog with others I don’t recommend selecting a name that’s too long.
A blog name should be descriptive so that readers know instantly what it’s about.
Blog Topic Ideas
→ Life experiences. Life has a way of teaching us lessons, we learn from experience.
So writing about your experiences and sharing your knowledge can be very helpful to
others. For example, I helped a friend start her blog about being a Military
wife. She has been married to a Marine for over 20 years and has a lot of experience
to share. What started as her wanting to help others evolved into connecting with
others on the topic. They relate to each other and she finds that very rewarding.
Think about what you’ve experienced in life and if you have a passion to share it.
This is a great way to decide on a topic for your blog.
→ Passions. Speaking of passion, what you’re passionate about is another great way to
decide on your blog topic. Pets, travel, cooking, beauty, and sports are all examples.
They’re broad topics, don’t be afraid to go very specific and tap into a niche. Literally
just about everyone has access to the internet so don’t be afraid of not having a large
→ Personal. It’s all about you. Personal blogs contain a variety of topics. Sharing your
daily life, your thoughts, and your passions can all be part of your blog. Because of that
if you don’t want to stick to just one topic this may be the route for you.
If you are blogging about a specific topic or niche then you want to include that in your blog name. Think outside the box and don’t focus on one word. For example, if you are going to be blogging about sports that does not mean it has to be in the name. You could niche that down to baseball, basketball, golf, football and people will still know what your blog is about.
If you’re planning on having a personal blog with a variety of topics I suggest you incorporate your name. After all, your blog is all about you! Your name may already be taken but, you can always incorporate your middle name or a variation of your name such as “Joe Smith Online” or “Blogging With Joe”.
Step 2: Register Your Domain Name
Once you have a name picked out for your blog the next step is to get your blog online. Don’t worry, it’s not as technical or as scary as it sounds! The steps below will make the process easy to understand.
In order to blog you have to have a blog host and blogging software. A blog host company stores all your files and blog software is how you build your WordPress blog. Good news though, they typically come together, starting with hosting.
You can get your domain name directly through Bluehost and make the whole process very easy. If you decide on Bluehost for your hosting company you can get a free domain for the first year. The only catch is that you have to buy 12 months of Bluehost web hosting. Hardly a catch because you should buy a minimum of 12 months when signing up for hosting anyways. Why? Because you get a cheaper price when you sign up for 12 months. You can buy your hosting and get the free domain at the same time.
You will likely only need the “Basic” package – if you aren’t sure, feel free to contact me with questions.
Disclosure: Bluehost compensates me when you purchase through my affiliate link. If you have any trouble signing up with Bluehost just contact me and I’ll be happy to help. My services are free of charge to you!
Step 3: Select Your Plan
If you want to get the lowest monthly rate for the Basic Plan the best value is purchasing a 36-month plan with Bluehost. It’s only $2.75 per month through my link. While it's a great price, give this some thought before making a 36-month commitment.
If you aren’t all in on the idea of having a blog and are just getting started I would sign up for the 12-month plan. It’s still a great price at $2.95 per month and makes it very affordable for one year of hosting for your blog. Don’t forget, you still receive a free domain even if you just sign up for 12 months.
PRO TIP: I recommend new bloggers select the Basic plan
Plus and Business Pro plans are more expensive and not something you need starting out. I don’t think there’s a need to sign up for these to get started. Plus, you can always change your plan later if you find you need too and will only pay the difference.
Step 4: Type In Your Domain Name
If you have an existing domain that you have already paid for use the box on the right.
After you have typed your domain name into the correct box click next.
Step 5: Enter Your Account Information
Step 6: Select Your Hosting Package and Options
This is when you’ll select the term you want. Keep in mind every package including the basic has everything you need to get your blog fully up and running. The 36-month package gets you the lowest monthly rate where in comparison the 12-month package gets you a lower upfront cost.
PRO TIP: Domain Privacy Protection will keep your contact information hidden after signing up. Because of that, it’s worth considering adding on at $0.99 per month. Not a must but, be prepared for phone calls and emails for a few weeks after you sign up if you opt not to get it.
I uncheck all the other boxes. If you change your mind down the road you can always add options at any time. Likewise, you can also cancel at any time and Bluehost offers a 30-day money back guarantee.
Step 7: Create Your Password
Once you’ve created your password then you can choose a design template for your blog. If you’re unsure on what template to choose don’t worry, you can always change it later. Read more below.
Step 8: Install WordPress On Bluehost
The moment has come! You’ve taken care of setting your hosting up on Bluehost and now the step you’ve been waiting for.
Pick your theme! Theme is just WordPress’ name for a blog layout. Once you’ve selected the theme you want and it installs then click start building to be logged into your blog. Happy dance, you now have a WordPress blog!!
PRO TIP: You login details for your blog are different than your login details for Bluehost. You should receive an email with your blog login details.
Step 9: Customize Your Blog
Once you’ve logged in you’ll be in the WordPress administrator area. Because will be spending a lot of time in this area, take some time to get familiar. This is where you can make pages, changes, and tweaks for the life of your blog.
WordPress makes it very easy to customize your blog and bring your vision to life. You selected your theme in the previous step but, as mentioned you can change it. If you want to change your theme just go to the appearance tab on the left. There are a few themes already installed on your blog and these themes can work for just about any type of blog and a great place to start.
In order to activate a theme on your blog hover over the theme of choice and click the activate button. You can literally change the design of your blog in one click!
Don’t like the pre-installed themes that you see? No problem! Just go to the appearance tab and click add new. This will take you to the theme search screen. You can search until your heart's content and then install the theme of your choice.
Step 10: Add Content To Your Blog
Content is key when it comes to building your blog. Share your experience, provide value, and be a resource for others. You can add content to your header, footer, sidebar etc. by clicking on appearance and then widgets.
To add a new blog post just click on posts on the left-hand side. Note, you will see a post is already there. It’s just a default post that appears on every WordPress blog. You don’t need it and in order to delete it just hover over it and then click on trash under the post. Add an image by clicking on media on the left-hand side.
